New Technologies Module 5

My school uses Promethean and Team Boards.  Most teachers use them as a glorified overhead.  I have given several workshops to help my colleagues on how to make more interactive lessons using their boards.  I have found most teachers will not take the time to explore the tools available.  Many are afraid they will do something they cannot undo.  While others feel they have too much to do as it is and they do not care to add anything else to the long list they already have to do.
Keller’s ARCS Model was developed to help arrange resources and procedures to maintain motivation of the learners (Keller, 2013).  Each letter represents a condition for motivation that needs to be “met to have a motivated learner” (Driscoll, 2005, pg. 333).  The first letter represents Attention.  In order to motivate my students, I will need to gain their attention beyond curiosity (2005).  Throughout my training, I will need to show Relevance.  My learners need to know why this training is important to them and how it will help them in the future.  Confidence building exercises are necessary to help those who struggle with basic technology or who think they will break the program.  If these three areas are met throughout my training, I will have a higher learner Satisfaction.

  1. What you explained about the Promethean Boards as glorified overhead projectors happens at my school as well. I hear the same responses from the teachers as well regarding they already have enough to do, and nothing is wrong with how they are teaching using the boards. I believe the teachers are intrigued regarding what can be done with the boards; they just do not want to put forth the time and effort. We do not have Promethean Boards in every room, but the majority of them are in the rooms of tested grade levels. My assistant principal has started requiring these teachers to receive training from our technology resource teacher, and using the boards properly in their lessons.

  2. Hi Lori,

A similar situation occurs at the college where I teach. Many professors do not know how to use Smart Boards and Smart Projects. Some of them have even difficulties using an overhead projector. Therefore, theses professors are afraid of using technology in the classroom. In addition, my college is called the College of Advanced Technology and what we are missing is technology. Every classroom does not have a computer for the instructor and an overhead projector connected to the computer. Some of the professors are willing to use the internet in the classroom but they do have a computer. Another issue the professors are facing is that when they use the internet to search they do not have access to all places they want to go online. In addition, the college has limited classrooms that have a Smart Board or a Smart Projector. I am a member of faculty committee and I try to work with the committee to bring workshops for the faculty so they could build their confidence of using technology in the classroom. Moreover, the faculty committee is trying to get the support of the board of directors by bringing these issues to them. Finally, the faculty committee wants every professor to have full technical support in and out the classroom from the IT department with a demonstration of how to use a program or an advanced computer device.

    Thanks,
    Konstadinos

  3. Hi Lori,

A friend of mine is a kindergarten teacher. She told me that she is using promethean board with her classroom. In fact, one of the other ways she uses her promethean board a lot is with other websites. She claims that it’s so nice to have access to different websites for the whole class to use. What is your opinion?

    Thanks,
    Konstadinos

    1. It is nice to be able to use the board in this way. However, the board can do so much more. I hope you will encourage her to look for or create interactive activities.
